PreKindergarten Snack Suggestions
My goal is not only to fill your child’s tummy but to expose them to new foods and teach healthy eating. Of course, I cannot do this without your help! Did you know that you need to try a new food 7 times before you might “like” it?
From past experience I have found that children are very willing to try new foods when they find out it is their friend’s favorite. I have also found that individually portioned foods packaged for convenience do not work well for us. The portion is often too small and the kids ask for more. Sometimes, it is too big and gets wasted. Please save yourself some money and buy a large container of applesauce or a large box of crackers rather than snack packs.
I have small bowls and spoons in the room, an apple cutter, knife and can opener. My volunteers are able to help serve snack and prepare it so we can cut apples, wash berries, pop microwave popcorn or mix instant pudding. The following is a list that my past students have enjoyed.
Celery or carrots with ranch, cream cheese or cheez whiz
Apples with peanut butter, cinnamon or caramel
Berries, bananas, pears, peaches, mandarin oranges, pineapple (fresh or canned)
Pretzels and cheese dip
Bagels, English muffins, or rice cakes with peanut butter or cream cheese
Instant pudding (I can use milk here at school)
Microwave popcorn (please send one bag per 5-6 students)
Meat and cheese (we can slice a block of cheese)
Saltines, Ritz, goldfish, wheat thins, animal crackers
Raisins, craisins, dried fruit (not fruit snacks though, they are not filling enough)
Yogurt (with graham sticks)
Graham crackers and frosting (instead of cookies for birthdays)
Please remember that snacks must be store bought according to state law and the packages must be unopened.
I will send the snack bag home as close to a birthday as possible so your child can bring a treat for their special day. Most of the time, cupcakes hit the floor before their mouth or they just lick the frosting but ice cream cups, sherbet, popsicles or cookies make great special treats.
Please do not feel restricted to items on this list. Ask your child what they would enjoy sharing!
